Birthing Rooms: 

Our two birthing rooms offer a private, spacious, home like environment with room for larger whanau groups if this is your requirement.

Specific design features to protect and promote a natural birth experience;    

  • each birthing room has a birthing pool for labour and/or water birth

  • light filter curtains, light dimmers and candles create a calm, relaxed environment

  • blue tooth speakers are available for you to use to play your own music

  • seating for your chosen support person or whanau ensures they are comfortable and also feel supported, space for multiple whanau members if this is your choice

  • birth art and photographs decorate the walls to celebrate and acknowledge the experience of labour and birth

  • wall decals to support, encourage and acknowledge the sacred passage of birth for both mama and pepi in English and Te Reo Maori

  • the birthing rooms are equipped to ensure the safety of you and your pepi/baby.

Your LMC midwife will care for you during your labour and birth. There is a staff midwife on duty to assist your midwife with your care if needed and/or to provide care for you until your LMC midwife arrives should you arrive at the facility before your LMC.

Your family/whanau and friends who you invite to visit you and your new pepi / baby may come at any time convienient to you throughout the day.

If you become tired and want visitors restricted, please let the staff midwife know if you are having difficulty managing this. You and your visitors are welcome to use the whanau lounge and dining area.

There are extra chairs available on request for visitors in your postnatal room.

Visiting time ends at 8pm to allow for those mamas and pepi/babies staying postnatally to have some quiet time.

Postnatal stay: 

We provide postnatal care to mama’s - wahine/women who have birthed at the unit, mamas who birth at Waikato Women’s Hospital are also able to stay postnatally.  Your postnatal stay is an important time for you to get to know your new born baby. Our facility is staffed by midwives who will care for you following the individual care plan you and your LMC midwife have created. The staff midwife will assist and support you with caring for your baby and establishing breastfeeding. 

Your partner / Tane (or a support person) is welcome to stay, we have created spacious and comfortable postnatal rooms with en-suites and queen size electric beds to accommodate you both.
 
We have co-sleeping cribs which allow you to have your baby sleep beside you safely, the crib can also be moved away from the bed if you prefer. 

We offer safe sleep education and can provide your pepi / baby with a safe sleep space pepi pod to take home if needed.

We offer all our mamas and their partner infant resus and choking education prior to discharge.

Our postnatal rooms have TV, kitchenette with fridge, sink and self-service tea, coffee or milo. Postnatal rooms have individual air conditioning. 

Meals: 

Breakfast is provided for mamas (and the support person staying). Available on a tray in your room or at the dining table in the whanau lounge/dining room. Breakfast time is flexible and the trays are set up in the dining room for you to help yourself when you are ready.

All lunch and evening meals are provided by Red Kitchen for the mamas. Meals can be catered to accommodate any allergies or preferences ie. gluten free or vegetarian.
